Reverse Osmosis

One of the best available filtration techniques in the present day is the reverse osmosis.  This is a very old process which has lasted for more than a century. It was only in the 1950s that the United States built it up as a system the Marines can use to make water drinkable by desalinating it.  Normal osmosis is when there is a movement of molecules through a membrane to balance the concentration of molecules on either side.  Reverse osmosis is the reverse of the normal osmosis process.  Rather than balancing the concentration of molecules on either side of the membrane, water pressure carries clean water one side of the membrane. Some of these contaminants are arsenic, mercury and lead.  By reverse osmosis, there is an effective removal of medications.  Some are MTBEs, THMs, viruses, VOCs, pesticides, herbicides, chloramines, fluoride, chlorine, percolate, coliform bacteria, E.coli and Cryptosporidium.  There are usual countertop or faucet filters classified as one stage filter because of their single basic carbon filter.  But in comparison, the reverse osmosis system offers a five-stage filtration system.  In addition, countertop filters contaminate less than one micron.  Thus insecticides and asbestos might not be filtered out.  This gives it a 1-5 micron rating.
